Abstract
Problem statement: modern antennas, depending on their application, may be subject to simultaneous requirements on mass and radar signature. Meanwhile, known methods for reducing the radar cross section (RCS) of antennas, as a rule, require the introduction of additional layers, structures, or special materials, i.e., they achieve the result at the cost of increasing mass and complicating the design. Therefore, it is relevant to search for methods that reduce RCS without such a cost. The purpose of the work is to present a method for manufacturing a sparse antenna based on a wire grid (WG) that ensures a simultaneous reduction of its mass and RCS, for which the authors are filing a patent. Methods used: when substantiating the technical solution and modeling its functioning in the MATLAB environment, the method of moments and the optimal current grid approximation were used. Novelty: the use of two threshold values when sparsifying the WG, which define the base and reference structures, and the additional exclusion of wires according to the criterion of their contribution to scattering when the antenna is excited by an incident wave (with linear ?-polarization) from a given set of directions. Result: using the example of a wire-grid monopole antenna, the number of ground plane wires was reduced from 1625 to 1081, i.e., the mass was reduced by a factor of 1.5, while the monostatic RCS in the direction normal to the antenna ground plane in the 2.2–10 GHz band was reduced on average by 3.85 dB (maximally by 7.38 dB), and the matching and radiation characteristics remained close to those obtained for the antenna with a full WG. Practical significance: the solution allows reducing the antenna RCS without introducing additional structures and materials, which makes it applicable in the design of antennas with stringent requirements on both mass and low observability simultaneously.
